Biography

James β€œRhodey” Rhodes was a U.S. Marine helicopter pilot who rescued Tony Stark from a war zone. That rescue began a friendship that would define both their lives. When Tony's alcoholism left him unable to wear the Iron Man armor, Rhodey put it on β€” not because he wanted glory, but because someone had to. He served as Iron Man for nearly two years, joined the West Coast Avengers, and proved he was more than Tony Stark's backup. He was his own hero.

Created by David Michelinie, John Byrne, and Bob Layton in Iron Man #118 (1979), Rhodey was introduced as a supporting character who quickly became essential. Denny O'Neil's Demon in a Bottle follow-up put Rhodey in the armor in issue #170 (1983). In 1992, Len Kaminski and Kevin Hopgood created the War Machine armor β€” a gray, heavily armed battle suit with a shoulder-mounted minigun and rocket launcher. Where Iron Man is elegant, War Machine is overwhelming. Where Tony builds surgical instruments, Rhodey brings artillery.

Rhodey headlined his own War Machine series in 1994, served as Iron Patriot, was reimagined as a cyborg by Greg Pak, and was killed by Thanos during Civil War II β€” a death that drove Tony Stark to war against Carol Danvers. He came back, because Rhodey always comes back. The armor fires up. The minigun spins. The War Machine takes flight.

Don Cheadle's portrayal of Rhodey across the MCU β€” from Iron Man 2 through Endgame to Armor Wars β€” made War Machine a global icon. But in the comics, Rhodey has always been what the films showed: Tony Stark's best friend, a soldier who earned his armor, and the proof that the Iron Man legacy is big enough for more than one hero. War Machine isn't a lesser Iron Man. He is the version of Iron Man that goes to war.
