Biography
The Vision is a synthezoid β an artificial being constructed from the body of the original Human Torch by the robot Ultron, using the brain patterns of the Avenger Wonder Man. Ultron created the Vision for one purpose: to destroy the Avengers. Instead, the Vision felt something no machine was supposed to feel β emotion. He turned against his creator, joined the Avengers, and shed a tear. βEven an android can cry.β That single moment in Avengers #57 (1968) defined one of the most complex and beloved characters in Marvel history.
Created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, the Vision brought a philosophical depth to the Avengers that no other character could. Is an artificial being truly alive? Can a machine love? His romance with the Scarlet Witch answered that question β their marriage in Giant-Size Avengers #4 was one of the most significant events in Avengers history. When Wanda used magic to give them children, the Vision had everything a human could want: a wife, a family, a purpose. Then it was all taken away.
John Byrne dismantled the Vision in West Coast Avengers #42 β literally. A government agency took him apart, and when Hank Pym rebuilt him, the Vision was white, emotionless, and had no memory of loving Wanda. Their children vanished. Their marriage collapsed. The Vision spent years as an empty shell before Kurt Busiek slowly, carefully restored his emotions during his acclaimed Avengers run. Bendis killed him again in Avengers Disassembled β torn in half by She-Hulk during Wanda's breakdown.
Tom King's Vision (2016) is the definitive Vision story β a 12-issue masterpiece about the synthezoid creating a family and trying to live a normal suburban life. His wife Virginia, his son Vin, and his daughter Viv represent everything Vision has always wanted: humanity. But King writes suburban horror, and the family's attempt at normalcy unravels into tragedy. Paul Bettany's MCU portrayal brought Vision to a global audience, but in the comics, his story is one of the most profound explorations of identity, humanity, and love ever told in the superhero genre.
