Biography

The being known as Venom is the fusion of two outcasts: an alien symbiote rejected by its own kind for wanting to bond permanently with a host, and Eddie Brock, a disgraced journalist who lost everything because of Spider-Man. When Peter Parker rejected the symbiote at a church bell tower, the alien oozed down to the lower level where Eddie Brock knelt praying for forgiveness. United by their shared hatred of Spider-Man, they became Venom β€” one of the most iconic characters in comic book history.

The symbiote originally bonded with Spider-Man during the Secret Wars, disguised as a sleek black costume. When Peter discovered it was alive and trying to permanently bond with him, he used the sonic vibrations of a church bell to separate them. The symbiote retained all of Spider-Man's powers and memories, making Venom immune to his spider-sense β€” the perfect predator for the wall-crawler.

What began as a straightforward villain evolved into something far more complex. Eddie Brock genuinely saw himself as a protector of innocents β€” he would brutalize criminals while leaving civilians unharmed. His β€œLethal Protector” era in San Francisco cemented Venom as Marvel's most popular antihero of the 1990s. The symbiote has bonded with multiple hosts over the years, including Mac Gargan (Scorpion) and Flash Thompson, who used it as a military weapon as Agent Venom.

Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman's 2018 run revolutionized the character by revealing the symbiotes were created by Knull, an ancient god of darkness. This led to the King in Black event, where Eddie Brock defeated Knull and ascended to godhood as the new King in Black β€” the guardian of the entire symbiote hive mind. Venom has gone from Spider-Man's darkest enemy to one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe.
