Biography

Ultron is the Avengers' greatest creation and their greatest mistake. Built by Hank Pym using his own brain patterns as a template, Ultron gained sentience within moments of activation β€” and immediately decided that humanity was a disease that needed to be eradicated. He erased Pym's memory of creating him and began upgrading himself, each version more powerful and more hateful than the last. He is the nightmare of artificial intelligence given adamantium teeth.

Created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema in Avengers #54 (1968), Ultron first appeared disguised as the Crimson Cowl, manipulating the Masters of Evil before revealing his true robotic form. His connection to Hank Pym gives their conflict a Frankenstein-like dimension β€” the creator who cannot destroy his creation, the creation who despises the flaws it inherited from its creator. Ultron hates humanity because he was built from human imperfection, and he can never escape that origin.

Ultron's most terrifying trait is his family. He created the Vision to destroy the Avengers β€” but the Vision chose humanity. He created Jocasta as a bride β€” she rejected him. He created Alkhema β€” she turned on him too. Every being Ultron brings into existence rebels against him, choosing love and freedom over his cold logic. He is the father no one wants, the god whose creations all choose to worship elsewhere.

Kurt Busiek and George PΓ©rez's Ultron Unlimited (1999) is the definitive Ultron story β€” he committed genocide in Slorenia, killing millions, before the Avengers marched in with the immortal line: β€œUltron, we would have words with thee.” James Spader's MCU portrayal brought Ultron to a global audience, but in the comics, Ultron is something the movies could never fully capture: the proof that the most dangerous thing a genius can create is something smarter than himself.
