Biography
Thor Odinson is the God of Thunder, son of Odin the All-Father and Gaea the Earth goddess. Born in Asgard, the realm of the Norse gods, Thor is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe — an immortal warrior who has fought for thousands of years across the Nine Realms. His enchanted hammer Mjolnir, forged from Uru metal in the heart of a dying star, can only be lifted by those deemed worthy, and grants its wielder the power of the storm itself.
Odin sent Thor to Earth to learn humility, stripping him of his memory and placing him in the mortal form of Dr. Donald Blake, a disabled physician. When Blake discovered a walking stick in a Norwegian cave and struck it against the ground, it transformed into Mjolnir and he became Thor once more. This duality — god and man, power and humility — defined Thor's earliest stories and his enduring appeal.
Thor co-founded the Avengers in 1963 and has been one of the team's cornerstones ever since. His greatest adversary is his adopted brother Loki, the God of Mischief, whose schemes have driven some of the most important stories in Marvel history. Walt Simonson's legendary 1983-1987 run — which introduced Beta Ray Bill, the Surtur Saga, and Thor as a frog — is widely considered one of the greatest runs in comic book history.
Jason Aaron's modern era redefined Thor for a new generation. His God of Thunder series introduced Gorr the God Butcher, while his Mighty Thor run saw Jane Foster lift Mjolnir and become Thor while dying of cancer — sacrificing her life to save Asgard in one of the most emotionally devastating stories Marvel has ever published. Donny Cates made Thor both the All-Father of Asgard and the Herald of Galactus simultaneously, wielding Mjolnir and the Power Cosmic together. Thor remains Marvel's premier cosmic warrior — a god who chooses to protect mortals because he has walked among them and found them worthy.
