Biography
Peter Parker was an orphaned teenager living with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben in Queens, New York. A shy, brilliant science student, Peter's life changed forever when he was bitten by a radioactive spider during a science exhibit. The bite granted him incredible abilities: superhuman strength, the ability to cling to walls, and a precognitive βspider-senseβ that warns him of danger.
Initially using his powers for personal gain, Peter learned the true meaning of responsibility when his Uncle Ben was murdered by a criminal Peter had earlier refused to stop. That night, the guilt-stricken teenager swore to use his powers to protect the innocent β becoming the Amazing Spider-Man. Uncle Ben's lesson, βWith great power there must also come great responsibility,β became the defining principle of Peter's life.
Spider-Man has one of the deepest and most iconic rogues galleries in all of comics β from the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus to Venom and Carnage. His supporting cast, including Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy, J. Jonah Jameson, and Aunt May, are among the most well-known characters in fiction. The death of Gwen Stacy in Amazing Spider-Man #121 is widely considered the moment that ended the Silver Age of Comics.
From his creation by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1962, Spider-Man has become the most popular and recognizable superhero in the world. His stories have explored themes of adolescence, responsibility, sacrifice, and perseverance that resonate with readers of every generation. He is Marvel's flagship character and the best-selling superhero in comic book history.
