Biography

On Earth-65, Gwen Stacy was bitten by the radioactive spider โ€” not Peter Parker. She became Spider-Woman, the hooded hero of New York City. Peter, desperate to be special like his friend Gwen, experimented on himself and became the Lizard. He died. Gwen carries that guilt the way Peter Parker carries Uncle Ben's death on Earth-616. It is the mirror image of the original Spider-Man tragedy: the same lesson about power and responsibility, told from the other side of the bridge.

Created by Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez in Edge of Spider-Verse #2 (2014), Spider-Gwen was intended as a one-issue character for the Spider-Verse event. Then the issue sold out immediately. Rodriguez's costume design โ€” the white hood, the teal-lined interior, the ballet slippers, the black and white suit with pink webbing โ€” became the most iconic new superhero look of the 2010s. Fan demand was so overwhelming that Marvel fast-tracked a solo series within months.

Latour and Rodriguez's Spider-Gwen ran for 39 issues across two volumes, building Earth-65 into a fully realized alternate world where Matt Murdock is a villain, Captain America is Samantha Wilson, and Frank Castle is a dirty cop. Gwen's father George Stacy hunts Spider-Woman not knowing it's his daughter. The Gwenom arc saw Gwen bond with a symbiote to regain lost powers. She eventually adopted the name Ghost-Spider and began attending college on Earth-616.

Hailee Steinfeld's voice performance in Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Across the Spider-Verse (2023) made Spider-Gwen a global icon. Her relationship with Miles Morales became one of the most beloved romances in modern superhero media. Edge of Spider-Verse #2 is now one of the most valuable modern comic books in existence. Spider-Gwen proved that the Spider-Man concept is universal โ€” it doesn't matter who is behind the mask, as long as they understand that with great power comes great responsibility.
