Biography

Billy Batson was a homeless orphan selling newspapers on the streets of Fawcett City when a mysterious stranger led him to a hidden subway tunnel. At the end of the tunnel sat an ancient wizard on a stone throne. The wizard's name was Shazam, and he had protected the world for thousands of years. He was dying. He needed a champion β€” someone pure of heart. He chose Billy. When Billy spoke the wizard's name β€” SHAZAM! β€” a bolt of magic lightning struck, and the boy was transformed into the World's Mightiest Mortal.

Created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck in Whiz Comics #2 (1940), Captain Marvel β€” as he was originally known β€” became the most popular superhero of the Golden Age, outselling Superman at the height of his fame. His adventures were lighter, funnier, and more fantastical than any other hero's. Beck's art was clean and cartoony, perfectly matching the wonder of a boy becoming a god. His rogues gallery included Dr. Sivana, Mr. Mind, and Black Adam.

DC Comics sued Fawcett for copyright infringement, claiming Captain Marvel was a Superman copy. Fawcett settled and ceased publication in 1953. DC later licensed and then acquired the character, but Marvel Comics had trademarked the name β€œCaptain Marvel” in the interim. DC was forced to publish Billy's comics under the title Shazam!, and eventually renamed the character himself. Jerry Ordway's Power of Shazam! (1995) and Geoff Johns and Gary Frank's New 52 backup stories are the definitive modern versions.

Zachary Levi portrayed Shazam in the DCEU films (2019, 2023). Alex Ross painted him as a tragic god in Kingdom Come. But at his core, Shazam is the simplest and most beautiful idea in superhero comics: a child who says a magic word and becomes a hero. No tragedy. No trauma. Just a kid who was chosen because he was good, given the power of gods, and used it to help people. In a genre built on darkness, Shazam is pure light.
