Biography

Anna Marie grew up in Caldecott County, Mississippi, raised by her aunt and later adopted by the shapeshifting mutant Mystique and her partner Destiny. Her mutant power β€” the ability to absorb the life force, memories, and abilities of anyone she touches β€” manifested during her first kiss with a boy named Cody Robbins. The kiss put Cody into a permanent coma and left Anna Marie traumatized, believing she could never touch another person without destroying them.

Mystique raised Rogue as a weapon, training her in combat and deploying her against the Avengers as a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. In her most devastating act, Rogue permanently absorbed the powers and psyche of Carol Danvers (Ms. Marvel), gaining superhuman strength, flight, and near-invulnerability β€” but also trapping Carol's personality inside her mind, creating a second voice that fought for control. Overwhelmed by the stolen memories and personalities warring inside her head, Rogue turned to Professor Xavier and the X-Men for help.

Despite the X-Men's initial distrust β€” Wolverine threatened to kill her on sight β€” Rogue proved herself to be one of the team's most dedicated and powerful members. Her inability to touch anyone made her romance with Gambit one of the most poignant love stories in comics β€” two people deeply in love who couldn't share a simple touch. For nearly three decades, their on-again, off-again relationship defined both characters until they finally married in 2018.

Rogue's journey from villain to hero, from isolation to love, and from victim of her own powers to their master is one of the great character arcs in Marvel Comics. Under Mike Carey's X-Men Legacy, she finally gained full control of her absorption power, able to touch at will. She has led X-Men teams, served on the Avengers, and become one of the most respected heroes in the Marvel Universe β€” proof that your past doesn't define your future.
