Biography

Rocket Raccoon is a genetically engineered raccoon from Halfworld β€” an asylum planet where animals were uplifted to serve as caretakers for the humanoid mentally ill residents called Loonies. Rocket was the chief ranger of Halfworld, protecting his charges with a combination of intelligence, ferocity, and an arsenal of weapons far too large for his small body. When he left Halfworld, he brought his tactical genius and his love of oversized guns to the wider galaxy.

Created by Bill Mantlo and Keith Giffen in Marvel Preview #7 (1976), Rocket was inspired by the Beatles' song β€œRocky Raccoon.” He appeared sporadically for decades β€” a brief Hulk appearance in 1982, a beautiful four-issue miniseries drawn by a pre-Hellboy Mike Mignola in 1985 β€” before Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning reinvented him for the Annihilation era. They transformed Rocket from a forgotten curiosity into the tactical heart of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Rocket is not the leader of the Guardians β€” that's Star-Lord. But he is the one who actually makes the plans work. His strategic mind, engineering skills, and complete refusal to accept impossible odds make him the team's most indispensable member. His bond with Groot β€” the tree creature who can only say β€œI am Groot” and whom only Rocket can understand β€” is the emotional center of the Guardians franchise. It is the most unlikely and most beloved friendship in all of Marvel Comics.

Bradley Cooper's MCU voice performance made Rocket a global icon and transformed Marvel Preview #7 from a forgotten Bronze Age magazine into one of the most sought-after keys in comics. But in the comics, Rocket's story is about something deeper: a creature who was engineered to be a caretaker and chose to be a warrior, who fights alongside gods and super-soldiers despite being three feet tall, and who proves every single day that the size of the fight in the raccoon matters more than the size of the raccoon in the fight.
