Biography

Robin is a legacy β€” four young heroes who wore the red and green and fought alongside Batman as the Boy Wonder. Dick Grayson was the original: a circus acrobat whose parents were murdered by a mobster, adopted by Bruce Wayne and trained to be his partner. Jason Todd was the street kid who stole the Batmobile's tires and was beaten to death by the Joker. Tim Drake was the genius who deduced Batman's identity and proved that Batman needs a Robin. Damian Wayne is Batman's biological son, raised by assassins, the most dangerous Robin who ever lived.

Created by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and Jerry Robinson in Detective Comics #38 (1940), Robin was the first superhero sidekick β€” the concept that changed comics. Dick Grayson gave young readers someone to identify with, and Batman someone to protect. Sales doubled after Robin's introduction. Dick eventually grew up, became Nightwing, and led the Teen Titans. His journey from sidekick to independent hero is the template every sidekick has followed since.

Jason Todd's death in A Death in the Family (1988) β€” where readers literally voted to kill Robin β€” remains the most controversial moment in Batman history. His return as the Red Hood, a vigilante who kills, is the darkest chapter of the Robin legacy. Tim Drake earned the mantle through intellect, ran the longest Robin solo series (183 issues), and recently came out as bisexual. Damian Wayne brought chaos to the Batcave β€” a ten-year-old trained killer who had to learn compassion from a father who barely knew how to show it himself.

Robin is not just a sidekick β€” Robin is the idea that Batman doesn't have to fight alone. Every Robin has made Bruce Wayne a better hero and a better person. Dick showed him how to trust. Jason showed him the cost of failure. Tim proved he needs help. Damian taught him to be a father. The Boy Wonder is Batman's greatest weapon β€” not because of what Robin can do, but because of what Robin makes Batman willing to become.
