Biography

Elizabeth “Betsy” Braddock is the twin sister of Brian Braddock — Captain Britain. Born into British aristocracy with powerful psychic abilities, she was already a telepath before she ever met the X-Men. She joined the team in 1986 as a purple-haired British psychic who fought with her mind rather than her fists. Then the Siege Perilous changed everything.

Created by Chris Claremont and Herb Trimpe in Captain Britain #8 (1976), Betsy debuted in the UK Marvel weekly as Brian Braddock's sister. She crossed over to the American X-books in 1986 and joined the X-Men. In 1989, Claremont and Jim Lee transformed her — Betsy passed through the Siege Perilous and emerged in the body of Kwannon, a Japanese assassin. The Hand brainwashed her as Lady Mandarin. She broke free but kept the ninja skills, the new body, and Lee's iconic redesign. The psychic knife — a focused totality of her telepathic powers — became her signature weapon.

The ninja Psylocke became one of the most popular X-Men of the 90s, appearing in Jim Lee's record-breaking X-Men #1 (1991). Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force (2010) is her finest story — she served on Wolverine's kill squad and was forced to destroy Archangel, the man she loved, when he became the new Apocalypse. It is the most emotionally devastating Psylocke story ever written.

In 2018, the body swap was finally undone — Betsy was restored to her original body, and Kwannon was resurrected separately. On Krakoa, Kwannon took the Psylocke name while Betsy became Captain Britain, wielding the Amulet of Right and protecting the multiverse. After decades in her brother's shadow, Betsy Braddock finally claimed a mantle that was entirely her own — proof that the most powerful weapon in the Marvel Universe isn't a shield or a hammer, but a mind sharp enough to cut through anything.
