Biography

Charles Francis Xavier was born into wealth and privilege, the son of nuclear researcher Brian Xavier. His mutant telepathy manifested at a young age, forcing him to hear the thoughts of everyone around him — their fears, lies, and darkest secrets. His stepbrother Cain Marko resented him, and their rivalry would later become the conflict between Professor X and the Juggernaut. After earning multiple degrees in genetics and biophysics, Xavier traveled the world, encountering both the best and worst of humanity.

Two encounters defined Xavier's life. In Cairo, he battled the Shadow King — an ancient psychic evil — and won, convincing him that mutants needed guidance and protection. In Israel, he met Erik Lehnsherr — the man who would become Magneto. They debated the future of mutantkind: Xavier believed in peaceful coexistence with humans, while Erik, a Holocaust survivor, believed humans would always persecute those who were different. They parted as friends who could never agree, becoming the philosophical poles around which the entire X-Men saga revolves.

Xavier founded the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters and built Cerebro, a device that amplifies his telepathy to detect mutants worldwide. His first students — Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel, and Iceman — became the original X-Men. When that team was captured by the living island Krakoa, Xavier recruited a second team including Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, and Nightcrawler in Giant-Size X-Men #1, saving the franchise and launching the Claremont era that would make the X-Men the most popular comic book in the world.

Xavier is not without darkness. He has mindwiped enemies, erased memories from his own students, sent a secret team to their deaths and covered it up, and his suppressed rage literally became the villain Onslaught. Jonathan Hickman's House of X reinvented Xavier as the founder of Krakoa, a mutant nation where he offered resurrection to all mutants and amnesty to former villains — a radical new vision that questioned whether Xavier's original dream of integration was ever achievable, or if mutants needed their own sovereign homeland to survive.
