Biography
Kurt Wagner was born with blue fur, a prehensile tail, pointed ears, fangs, and three-fingered hands — a physical mutation so extreme that his own mother, the shapeshifter Mystique, threw him off a cliff as an infant to escape an angry mob. Rescued and raised by a Romani sorceress named Margali Szardos in a Bavarian circus, Kurt grew up as a star performer — a trapeze artist whose audiences assumed his demonic appearance was just an incredible costume.
When the truth was discovered, the villagers turned on Kurt with torches and pitchforks. Professor Xavier arrived just in time, recruiting the terrified young man into the All-New X-Men. Despite looking like a demon, Kurt Wagner proved to be the most warm-hearted, joyful, and spiritually centered member of the team. A devout Catholic, he found no contradiction between his faith and his mutation — believing that God made him exactly as he was meant to be.
Nightcrawler is the X-Men's swashbuckler — a fencer, an acrobat, and an incurable romantic who fights with the flair of Errol Flynn and the faith of a saint. His teleportation power, which transports him through another dimension with a distinctive “BAMF” sound and a cloud of brimstone, makes him one of the most versatile X-Men in combat. He co-founded Excalibur, the British superhero team, and later sacrificed his life to save Hope Summers during the Second Coming event — teleporting her to safety while being impaled through the chest.
Kurt was later resurrected after literally fighting his way out of Heaven to continue protecting the living. On Krakoa, he founded the Spark — a new spiritual philosophy for mutantkind — becoming the mutant nation's spiritual leader. Nightcrawler proves that appearances are meaningless — the man who looks like a devil has the soul of an angel.
