Biography

Miles Morales didn't want to be Spider-Man. He watched Peter Parker die saving people, and he knew what the job cost. But when a genetically engineered spider β€” stolen from Oscorp by his uncle Aaron Davis, the Prowler β€” bit him, Miles gained powers he never asked for: strength, agility, wall-crawling, and two abilities Peter Parker never had β€” a bio-electric β€œVenom Strike” and the ability to turn invisible. He could have ignored it. He could have lived a normal life. Instead, he put on the mask because someone had to.

Created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli in Ultimate Fallout #4 (2011), Miles Morales is the most important new superhero of the 21st century. An Afro-Latino teenager from Brooklyn, Miles was introduced in the Ultimate Universe after that world's Peter Parker was killed. Bendis wrote Miles as a kid who didn't want the responsibility but couldn't walk away from it β€” the purest expression of Spider-Man's central theme since Peter Parker himself. Pichelli's art gave Miles warmth, youth, and a visual identity distinct from every Spider-Man before him.

After the Ultimate Universe was destroyed in Secret Wars (2015), Miles was transplanted to the main Marvel Universe (Earth-616), where he exists alongside Peter Parker. He co-founded the Champions with Ms. Marvel and Nova. Saladin Ahmed's run (2019) is the definitive Miles solo series, grounding him in Brooklyn with his family, his friends, and his own rogues gallery.

Shameik Moore's voice performance in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) made Miles a global phenomenon. The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and proved what the comics had been saying for years: anyone can wear the mask. Miles Morales is not a replacement for Peter Parker β€” he is proof that the idea of Spider-Man is bigger than any one person, and that the kid from Brooklyn who didn't want the job might be the one who was always meant to have it.
