Powers & Abilities
Biography
Kitty Pryde was thirteen years old when she walked through a wall and changed the X-Men forever. A Jewish girl from Deerfield, Illinois, she was the youngest person ever recruited to Xavier's school — a kid surrounded by warriors, telepaths, and weather goddesses. She was scared, she was brilliant, and she refused to be left behind. From her very first appearance, Kitty was the reader's way into the X-Men — the normal person in an extraordinary world who proved that courage matters more than power.
Created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne in Uncanny X-Men #129 (1980), Kitty debuted during the Dark Phoenix Saga and immediately became the heart of the team. Her bond with Wolverine — the most dangerous man alive protecting the most innocent member — is one of the greatest relationships in comics. In Days of Future Past, an older Kitty sent her consciousness back in time to save the world, proving she was the most important X-Man of all.
Kitty grew up in public. She went from Sprite to Ariel to Shadowcat, trained as a ninja under Ogun, led Excalibur in England with Nightcrawler and Captain Britain, and returned to the X-Men as a woman who had earned her place through decades of sacrifice. Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men made her the star — reuniting her with Colossus and culminating in her phasing a giant bullet through the entire Earth to save the planet, trapping herself in space.
On Krakoa, she became Captain Kate Pryde of the Marauders — the only mutant who couldn't walk through the Krakoan gates, commanding a ship that smuggled mutants to safety. She punched Emma Frost, became the Red Queen of the Hellfire Trading Company, was murdered and resurrected, and got her revenge. The girl who walked through walls grew up to be a captain, a leader, and one of the most beloved characters in the Marvel Universe — proof that the X-Men's greatest power isn't mutation. It's heart.
