Biography
Cain Marko is the Juggernaut β the unstoppable force. Once he starts moving, nothing in the Marvel Universe can stop him. Not the X-Men. Not the Avengers. Not the Hulk. His power doesn't come from mutation or science β it comes from Cyttorak, an elder god of destruction who chose Cain as his avatar on Earth. The Crimson Gem of Cyttorak transformed a bitter, angry man into a living wrecking ball with virtually unlimited strength and an invulnerable mystical force field.
Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in X-Men #12 (1965), Juggernaut is Charles Xavier's stepbrother β the bully who tormented the future leader of the X-Men throughout their childhood. Their father Kurt Marko was abusive, and Cain's rage was born from that home. When both brothers served in Korea, Cain discovered a hidden temple and touched the Crimson Gem. He was buried under the collapsing temple and dug himself out years later, transformed into something inhuman.
Roger Stern and John Romita Jr.'s βNothing Stops the Juggernautβ (Amazing Spider-Man #229-230) is the definitive Juggernaut story β Spider-Man alone against the unstoppable force, unable to hurt him, unable to slow him, winning only through sheer refusal to quit. It is the story that defines what Juggernaut means in the Marvel Universe: the ultimate test of willpower, because you cannot outfight him β you can only outlast him.
Juggernaut has walked the line between villain and hero multiple times. He joined the X-Men under Chuck Austen, served on the Thunderbolts under Jeff Parker, and starred in his own solo series under Fabian Nicieza. Vinnie Jones portrayed him in X-Men: The Last Stand. But in the comics, Juggernaut remains what he has always been: the simplest and most terrifying concept in superhero fiction β a man who cannot be stopped, driven by rage that cannot be reasoned with, powered by a god who demands destruction.
