Biography

In 1944, a group of Nazi occultists led by Grigori Rasputin performed a ritual to summon a demon from Hell to win the war. They succeeded — but the demon they summoned was an infant with a stone right hand, red skin, and filed-down horns. Allied soldiers found the creature and named him Hellboy. Professor Trevor Bruttenholm of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense raised him as a son. The demon destined to destroy the world grew up eating pancakes, reading comics, and punching monsters for a living.

Created by Mike Mignola, Hellboy first appeared in San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2 (1993) and launched in his own series with Hellboy: Seed of Destruction #1 (1994). Mignola built an entire mythology from folklore, Lovecraftian horror, pulp adventure, and Catholic guilt. Hellboy's Right Hand of Doom is the key to the Apocalypse — if he ever uses it for its intended purpose, the Ogdru Jahad will be freed and the world will end. He cut off his own horns to reject that destiny. Every story is about a demon choosing to be human.

Mignola's art is the character — stark black shadows, Gothic architecture, and figures carved from darkness. The Mignolaverse expanded into B.P.R.D., Abe Sapien, Lobster Johnson, and dozens of interconnected series that tell a single story spanning from the 1930s to the end of the world. The Wild Hunt revealed Hellboy is descended from King Arthur. The Fury killed him. Hellboy in Hell was his final journey — the demon walking through the ruins of Hell after Satan's death, finding peace at last.

Ron Perlman and David Harbour have portrayed Hellboy on screen, but Mike Mignola's comics remain the definitive version — a complete story with a beginning, middle, and ending about a monster who chose to be a man. Hellboy is the greatest creator-owned character of the modern era, and the proof that what makes a hero is not his origin but his choices.
