Biography
Before the current universe existed, there was another — and in that dying cosmos lived Galan, an explorer from the planet Taa. As his universe collapsed in the Big Crunch, Galan flew his ship into the heart of the cosmic egg — the singularity from which all reality would be reborn. There, he merged with the Sentience of the Universe itself. When the Big Bang created the new cosmos, Galan was reborn as Galactus — a cosmic entity of immeasurable power who must consume the life energy of entire planets to survive.
Galactus is neither good nor evil — he is a force of nature, as fundamental to the universe as gravity or entropy. He serves a cosmic purpose: maintaining the balance between Eternity and Death. The universe itself requires his existence, and without him, a far greater threat — the cosmic parasite Abraxas — would be unleashed to destroy all of reality. This terrible truth means that every hero who has ever stopped Galactus has also, unknowingly, preserved the being that will one day devour their own world.
To find suitable worlds, Galactus empowers mortal beings with a fraction of the Power Cosmic, transforming them into his Heralds. The most famous is Norrin Radd of Zenn-La — the Silver Surfer — who sacrificed his freedom to save his homeworld, only to spend centuries leading Galactus to populated planets. Other Heralds include Terrax the Tamer, Firelord, Nova (Frankie Raye), Air-Walker, and Stardust.
Galactus's first encounter with Earth came in Fantastic Four #48, when the Silver Surfer led him to the planet. The Fantastic Four, with the aid of the Watcher Uatu and the cosmic weapon known as the Ultimate Nullifier, forced Galactus to retreat — marking the first time any world had ever successfully defied the Devourer. This trilogy, written by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby, is widely considered one of the greatest stories in comic book history and elevated the medium to mythological proportions.
