Biography

Emma Frost was born into wealth and raised in cruelty. Her father was a Boston billionaire who treated his children as instruments of his ambition. Emma's telepathy manifested in adolescence, and she used it to escape her family's control and build her own empire. She became the White Queen of the Hellfire Club — a criminal telepath who dressed in lingerie, wielded power like a weapon, and made no apologies for any of it. She was the X-Men's most elegant and dangerous enemy.

Created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne in Uncanny X-Men #129 (1980), Emma debuted during the Dark Phoenix Saga as a Hellfire Club villain who tried to recruit Kitty Pryde and helped corrupt Jean Grey. For a decade, she was one of the X-Men's primary antagonists. Then her students — the Hellions — were massacred. The trauma of losing the children she had raised and trained shattered her. When she awoke from her coma, Emma Frost chose to become what she had once despised: a teacher who protects her students above all else.

She co-founded Generation X with Banshee, teaching Jubilee, Chamber, Husk, and others at the Massachusetts Academy. Grant Morrison brought her to the X-Men in New X-Men, giving her a secondary diamond-form mutation and a controversial psychic affair with Cyclops. Joss Whedon made her co-headmaster of the Xavier Institute. Matt Fraction wrote her as the X-Men's political strategist. On Krakoa, she became the White Queen of the Hellfire Trading Company and a member of the Quiet Council.

Emma Frost is the most complex character in X-Men history. She is vain, cutting, manipulative, and unapologetically ambitious. She is also fiercely protective, genuinely compassionate toward children, and willing to sacrifice everything for the mutant species. She has been a villain, a teacher, a lover, a queen, and a revolutionary. She has never once pretended to be nice. And that refusal — to be anything other than exactly who she is — is what makes her the most fascinating woman in the Marvel Universe.
