Biography

Dr. Stephen Strange was the world's greatest neurosurgeon β€” brilliant, arrogant, and consumed by wealth and prestige. When a catastrophic car accident destroyed the nerves in his hands, ending his surgical career, Strange spent his fortune searching for a cure. Desperate and destitute, he traveled to the Himalayas seeking the Ancient One, a legendary healer. Instead of a medical cure, the Ancient One offered Stephen something far greater: the mystic arts. Strange became the Sorcerer Supreme β€” Earth's primary magical defender against interdimensional threats, elder gods, and cosmic-level mystical dangers.

Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in Strange Tales #110 (1963), Doctor Strange was unlike anything else in comics. While other heroes punched villains, Strange battled Nightmare in the Dream Dimension and Dormammu in the Dark Dimension. Ditko's psychedelic, surrealist art created landscapes that looked like nothing else on the spinner rack β€” melting realities, impossible geometries, and cosmic vistas that influenced an entire generation of artists and the counterculture movement of the 1960s.

Strange co-founded the Defenders with the Hulk, Namor, and Silver Surfer β€” the β€œnon-team” of Marvel's most powerful loners. He joined the Illuminati, the secret council of Marvel's greatest minds, and served on multiple Avengers rosters. His rogues gallery includes Dormammu, Nightmare, Baron Mordo, and Shuma-Gorath. His love story with Clea β€” Dormammu's niece who eventually became Sorcerer Supreme herself β€” is one of Marvel's most epic romances.

Jason Aaron's 2015 relaunch with Chris Bachalo redefined Doctor Strange for the modern era, revealing that magic has a hidden cost and that Strange has been paying it with his body for years. Benedict Cumberbatch's MCU portrayal made Strange a global icon. Jed MacKay's Death of Doctor Strange (2021) killed the Sorcerer Supreme and passed the mantle to Clea before Strange's inevitable resurrection. Through every era, Doctor Strange remains Marvel's most cerebral hero β€” a man who traded a scalpel for a spell book and discovered that the greatest surgery is performed on reality itself.
