Biography

Matthew Michael Murdock grew up in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of New York City, raised by his father, boxer β€œBattlin'” Jack Murdock. Jack made Matt promise to study hard, stay out of fights, and make something of himself. As a teenager, Matt pushed an old man out of the path of a truck carrying radioactive waste. The chemicals splashed across his eyes, permanently blinding him β€” but in exchange, his remaining four senses were heightened to superhuman levels, and he developed a radar-like spatial awareness that let him β€œsee” the world in ways no sighted person could.

When Matt's father was murdered by gangsters for refusing to throw a boxing match, the young man swore vengeance. Trained in martial arts by the mysterious blind sensei Stick, Matt became both a licensed attorney by day β€” fighting for justice in the courtroom with his partner Foggy Nelson β€” and the masked vigilante Daredevil by night, protecting the streets of Hell's Kitchen with his fists. He is the Man Without Fear, a blind man who sees more than anyone.

Daredevil's life has been defined by tragedy. The women he loves β€” Elektra Natchios, Karen Page, Milla Donovan β€” have all suffered because of their connection to him. His nemesis, the Kingpin, has dismantled his life repeatedly, most devastatingly in Frank Miller's β€œBorn Again” saga. Bullseye, the assassin who never misses, killed both Elektra and Karen Page. Yet Matt Murdock always gets back up. His Catholic faith, his sense of justice, and his refusal to surrender define him.

Daredevil is widely considered to have the most consistently excellent creative runs of any Marvel character. Frank Miller reinvented him in the early 1980s, transforming a second-tier hero into a noir masterpiece. Kevin Smith, Brian Michael Bendis, Ed Brubaker, Mark Waid, and Chip Zdarsky each delivered landmark runs that rank among the best in comics. Daredevil proves that a street-level hero with no superpowers beyond enhanced senses can carry stories as powerful as any god or cosmic being.
