Biography

Scott Summers was orphaned as a child when the plane carrying his family was attacked by the Shi'ar emperor D'Ken. Scott and his brother Alex (who would become Havok) were pushed from the plane with a single parachute. The landing caused brain damage that left Scott unable to control his devastating optic blasts β€” powerful concussive beams that fire uncontrollably from his eyes unless contained by ruby quartz lenses. Raised in an orphanage under the sinister influence of Mr. Sinister, Scott was eventually found by Professor Charles Xavier and became the first X-Man.

As Cyclops, Scott was groomed from age sixteen to be the field leader of the X-Men. He is not the most powerful mutant, nor the most charismatic β€” but he is arguably the most important. His tactical brilliance, unwavering dedication, and willingness to make impossible decisions have made him the spine of the X-Men for over sixty years. His love story with Jean Grey β€” from their shy teenage romance through the Dark Phoenix Saga and her death on the Moon β€” is one of the greatest love stories in comics.

Cyclops's character arc is one of the most dramatic in Marvel. He evolved from a by-the-book boy scout into a militant revolutionary willing to do whatever it takes to ensure mutant survival. He abandoned his wife and newborn son to reunite with Jean Grey. He had a psychic affair with Emma Frost. He was possessed by the Phoenix Force and killed Professor Xavier. He became a fugitive who declared β€œthe mutant revolution starts now.” Yet even at his most controversial, the phrase β€œCyclops was right” became a rallying cry because his predictions about mutant persecution always came true.

In the Krakoa era, Cyclops found redemption β€” resurrected by his own son Cable, he became one of the architects of the mutant nation, leading the X-Men from the Summer House on the Moon. Scott Summers has been a student, a leader, a husband, a father, a revolutionary, a killer, and a savior. He is the X-Men.
