Biography

Cletus Kasady was a serial killer long before the symbiote found him. Orphaned after murdering his own grandmother and burning down the orphanage he was sent to, Kasady was convicted of eleven murders and sentenced to life in Ryker's Island prison. His cellmate was Eddie Brock — the man known as Venom. When the Venom symbiote broke Brock out of prison, it unknowingly left behind a spawn — a new symbiote that bonded directly to Kasady's bloodstream through a cut on his hand.

Unlike the Venom symbiote, which bonded externally to its host, the Carnage symbiote fused with Kasady at a cellular level. This made the bond far stronger and nearly impossible to separate. The symbiote amplified everything Kasady already was — a remorseless, nihilistic psychopath who killed for the pure thrill of it. Where Venom had a twisted moral code, Carnage had none. Where Venom protected the innocent, Carnage slaughtered them. Kasady didn't say “we” like Eddie Brock — he said “I,” because he and the symbiote were truly one being.

Carnage proved so dangerous that Spider-Man could not defeat him alone. The first Carnage story forced Spider-Man into an uneasy alliance with Venom — his greatest enemy — just to survive. This pattern repeated throughout the Maximum Carnage crossover, where Carnage assembled a team of psychopaths and turned New York City into a war zone. It took Spider-Man, Venom, Captain America, Black Cat, Cloak and Dagger, Firestar, and more to finally stop him.

In the modern era, writer Donny Cates connected Carnage to Knull, the god of symbiotes. Kasady was resurrected as Dark Carnage — the prophet of Knull — and hunted every person who had ever bonded with a symbiote to collect their codexes and awaken the dark god. The Absolute Carnage event was the culmination of this arc, leading directly into King in Black. Even after Kasady's death, the Carnage symbiote has continued to find new hosts, proving that the legacy of chaos is bigger than any single killer.
