Biography

Carol Danvers has been many things: Air Force pilot, NASA security chief, Ms. Marvel, Binary, Warbird, and finally Captain Marvel β€” the name she was always meant to carry. Her journey from supporting character to the most powerful hero in the Marvel Universe took decades of reinvention, loss, and triumph. She has had her powers stolen, her memories erased, her body violated, and her reputation destroyed. She came back every time, stronger than before.

Created by Roy Thomas and Gene Colan in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (1968), Carol debuted as a NASA security chief who encountered the Kree warrior Mar-Vell. An explosion from the Psyche-Magnitron device fused her DNA with Kree genetics. She became Ms. Marvel in 1977, fighting with superhuman strength, flight, and energy projection. Chris Claremont elevated her in the late 70s, but Avengers #200 β€” one of the most controversial comics ever published β€” traumatized both Carol and her fans. Claremont wrote Avengers Annual #10 as a direct response, giving Carol the chance to confront her teammates.

Rogue stole Carol's powers and memories. The X-Men's Brood experimented on her. She emerged as Binary, tapping into the power of a white hole β€” one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. She eventually returned to Earth, struggled with alcoholism as Warbird, and rebuilt herself again. Brian Reed's Ms. Marvel (2006) proved she could carry a solo book. Then Kelly Sue DeConnick changed everything.

DeConnick's Captain Marvel (2012) gave Carol the name she deserved. The Carol Corps β€” a passionate fandom β€” rallied behind the book. Brie Larson's MCU portrayal in Captain Marvel (2019) made Carol a global icon. Kelly Thompson's run (2019) is the most acclaimed modern Captain Marvel series. Carol Danvers is the proof that the most powerful hero in the Marvel Universe is not the one who never falls β€” it's the one who always gets back up.
