Biography
Steven Grant Rogers was a frail, sickly young man from Brooklyn, New York who desperately wanted to serve his country during World War II but was repeatedly rejected by the military for his physical limitations. His unwavering determination caught the attention of Dr. Abraham Erskine, who selected Steve for Project: Rebirth — a top-secret experiment to create a super soldier. The Super Soldier Serum transformed Steve's body to the peak of human perfection, giving him extraordinary strength, speed, endurance, and reflexes.
Armed with an indestructible vibranium shield and partnered with his young sidekick Bucky Barnes, Captain America became the greatest hero of World War II, battling the Red Skull, HYDRA, and the forces of the Axis powers. In the final days of the war, Cap was lost in the freezing waters of the North Atlantic while trying to stop a drone plane. The Super Soldier Serum preserved his body in suspended animation for decades until the Avengers discovered him frozen in a block of ice.
Revived in the modern era, Steve Rogers became the heart and soul of the Avengers — the team's moral compass and greatest field leader. He has led Earth's Mightiest Heroes through countless crises, from the Kree-Skrull War to the Infinity Gauntlet to Civil War. When he has disagreed with his government, he has surrendered the Captain America identity rather than compromise his principles — becoming Nomad, and later The Captain.
Captain America represents the ideal of what America can be — not blind patriotism, but unwavering dedication to justice, freedom, and doing what is right regardless of the cost. He has inspired multiple successors including Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson to carry the shield, proving that Captain America is more than one man — it's an ideal.
