Biography
Nathan Christopher Charles Summers was born to be a weapon. The son of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Madelyne Pryor β a clone of Jean Grey engineered by Mister Sinister β Nathan was the product of generations of genetic manipulation. Sinister believed the Summers/Grey DNA combination would produce the ultimate mutant, powerful enough to destroy Apocalypse. He was right, but the path to that destiny would be paved with tragedy.
As an infant, Nathan was infected with the techno-organic virus by Apocalypse β a death sentence that would slowly convert his body to organic metal. The only hope was to send him 2,000 years into the future, where the Askani clan could treat the virus. Cyclops made the most painful decision of his life, sending his baby son through a time portal, believing he would never see him again. Later, Cyclops and Jean Grey's minds were sent to the future, where they raised Nathan as βSlymβ and βReddβ for twelve years before being pulled back to the present.
Nathan grew up in a dystopian future ruled by Apocalypse, trained as a soldier from childhood. He spent most of his immense psychic power β potentially omega-level telekinesis and telepathy β simply keeping the techno-organic virus from consuming his body. Taking the name Cable, he traveled back to the present day to prevent Apocalypse's rise and fulfill the Askani prophecy. He took command of the New Mutants, transforming them into X-Force, a proactive strike team that would fight the battles the X-Men wouldn't.
Cable's greatest legacy is Hope Summers β the first mutant born after M-Day, whom Cable raised in the future while on the run from Bishop. He sacrificed his life during Second Coming to bring Hope to the present, where she reignited the mutant gene. His partnership with Deadpool produced one of Marvel's most beloved series, proving that beneath the guns, scars, and soldier's exterior, Nathan Summers was driven by the same thing his father was: the hope that tomorrow could be better than today.
