Biography

Eric Brooks was born while a vampire fed on his mother. The vampire Deacon Frost attacked her during childbirth, killing her and passing vampiric enzymes into the infant's blood. Eric gained all the strengths of a vampire — superhuman strength, speed, senses, and healing — with none of their weaknesses. He could walk in daylight. Garlic and crosses meant nothing to him. He was the Daywalker: half-human, half-vampire, and dedicated to destroying every vampire on Earth.

Created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan in Tomb of Dracula #10 (1973), Blade was introduced as a supporting character in Marvel's greatest horror series. He was a leather-clad vampire hunter with wooden stakes and a personal vendetta against Deacon Frost. Wolfman wrote him as relentless and singular — a man with one purpose and no hesitation. Colan drew him as a force of controlled fury, cutting through the undead with precision and rage.

Wesley Snipes' 1998 Blade film changed everything — not just for Blade, but for the entire superhero film genre. Blade was the first commercially successful Marvel movie, proving that comic book properties could work on screen. Without Blade, there is no X-Men (2000), no Spider-Man (2002), no MCU. The Daywalker opened the door that every Marvel film walked through.

In the comics, Blade joined the Midnight Sons during the 90s horror boom, led the Nightstalkers alongside Hannibal King, and eventually became an Avenger under Jason Aaron. His most radical transformation came in 2022 when he became the king of the vampires — ruling the undead to control them. Mahershala Ali is set to portray Blade in the MCU, continuing the legacy of a character who is both Marvel's greatest vampire hunter and the man who proved Marvel movies could change the world.
