Biography

Henry β€œHank” McCoy was born with oversized hands and feet β€” the visible sign of his mutation. His father worked at a nuclear plant, and the radiation exposure triggered Hank's X-gene. Despite his unusual appearance, Hank was a brilliant student and star athlete who earned a scholarship to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. He became Beast β€” the X-Men's resident genius, a man who quoted Shakespeare while performing acrobatic feats that defied his massive frame.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in X-Men #1 (1963), Beast was originally the most human-looking of the original five X-Men β€” just a big guy with big hands and big feet. That changed forever in Amazing Adventures #11 (1972), when Hank drank an experimental mutagenic serum that transformed him into a gray-furred (later blue) creature with fangs and claws. The transformation was meant to be temporary, but he waited too long to take the antidote. The brilliant scientist was trapped in a monstrous body β€” a cruel irony that has defined Beast ever since.

Beast became the first X-Man to join the Avengers, bridging Marvel's two biggest teams. He served on the Defenders, reunited with the original five in X-Factor, and returned to the X-Men for their greatest eras. Grant Morrison gave him a secondary cat-like mutation in New X-Men, and Joss Whedon explored his despair over his increasingly inhuman appearance in Astonishing X-Men. Throughout it all, Hank remained the heart of the X-Men β€” the one who believed in coexistence, who saw science as the bridge between humans and mutants, who quoted poetry while punching Sentinels.

Benjamin Percy's X-Force (2019-2023) took Beast in the most controversial direction in his history. As head of Krakoan intelligence, Hank made increasingly ruthless and manipulative decisions β€” torture, surveillance, betrayal of allies β€” becoming virtually indistinguishable from a villain. The genius who once represented the best of mutantkind became a cautionary tale about what happens when brilliant people convince themselves that the ends justify any means. Beast's arc across sixty years β€” from idealistic scientist to moral monster β€” is one of the most tragic in all of comics.
