Biography

Warren Kenneth Worthington III was born into unimaginable wealth — heir to the Worthington fortune, one of the richest families in America. But wealth meant nothing when feathered wings erupted from his back during adolescence. Rather than hide, Warren fashioned a costume and became the Avenging Angel, a vigilante who saved people from above. Professor Xavier recruited him as one of the original five X-Men, where Warren's angelic wings and boyish optimism made him the team's golden boy.

That golden image was shattered during the Mutant Massacre. When Mister Sinister's Marauders attacked the Morlocks in the tunnels beneath Manhattan, Warren's wings were critically injured by Harpoon's energy spear. The damage was irreparable, and his wings were amputated. Without flight — the core of his identity — Warren spiraled into despair. His plane was sabotaged and exploded, and the world believed Angel was dead.

But Apocalypse had other plans. The ancient mutant took the broken Warren and rebuilt him as Death, the deadliest of his Four Horsemen. Warren's feathered wings were replaced with razor-sharp techno-organic metal wings capable of firing poisoned flechettes. His skin turned blue. His mind was twisted toward rage and violence. When he was reintroduced to his former teammates as Archangel, he was barely recognizable — a weapon wearing the face of a friend.

Warren eventually broke free of Apocalypse's control, but the Archangel persona never truly left. It lurked beneath the surface for decades, erupting in Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force in the Dark Angel Saga — widely considered one of the greatest X-Men stories ever told. Warren fully succumbed to the Apocalypse programming, becoming the Heir of Apocalypse, and Psylocke — the woman who loved him — was forced to kill him to save the world. He was reborn with no memories, innocent but empty. Warren Worthington's story is the tragedy of a man who was unmade, remade, and can never truly be whole again.
